Did you know that Jen Horner and I meet every month to discuss our chronic absentee students? From that meeting we schedule Attendance Correction Action Plan (A-CAP) meetings (Step 2) and/or final parent meeting (Step 3) before contacting the authorities (Step 4).
Jen and I had our first attendance meeting this past Tuesday and we have over 44 students with four or more absences…ALREADY! This is really sad.
She will be contacting all of those students to put them on an A-CAP, but she cannot do this if you are not doing your part (Step 1).
As a reminder, when a student reaches two absences, the teacher
is required to contact the parent/guardian by phone, email, or in person to
inquire about the well-being of the student. In addition, after four absences
the teacher is required to contact the parent/guardian again to discuss the
causes of the absences and offer support and/or suggestions for improvement.
Make sure to inform your dean and Jen
Horner of all contacts (e.g., ‘cc’ on the email) for documentation purposes in
case the absences escalate to an A-CAP or a referral to Sumpter Police or Wayne
County Prosecutor’s Erase Truancy Program.
There are
examples of a communication that you can use when emailing families on the
U-drive àAttendance folder à Teacher Email to Parents. Please feel free to “tweak” the email
templates to add your personal touch or if you have a unique situation.
Thank you for your assistance with
reminding parents that minimizing absences to only those that are absolutely
necessary will have a positive effect on achievement.
