Technology

As you know, we believe in the “whole” child and want to provide our students with the opportunity to socially interact. The majority of their day is spent listening and learning, so whenever it’s possible (lunch, recess, engagement strategies during lessons, etc.) we want them to use their social skills. Therefore, students are not allowed on technology (Chromebooks, movies, etc.) during lunch or dismissal. Students can have the option of technology during indoor recess, but it should be an option among other things, not the only choice.

EOY Technology

Please make sure to do the following regarding EOY technology.

Projectors

These need to be shut off before you leave Friday and the remote needs to be put in your center desk drawer.  Please remove the ScreenBeam from your projector and store it with your remote.  Once your ScreenBeam is removed, close up your projector with the plastic piece that was removed to install the ScreenBeam.

Elmo

Store your Elmo and all Elmo cords in one of your classroom cabinets.

Google Classroom

Archive all your Google Classrooms before you leave on Friday, June 10.

Lexia and Dreambox Requirements

As we discussed in our January 11th staff meeting, students are NOT required to do Lexia nor Dreambox every day during workshop. The maximum number of days that we require per digital tool is 2-3 times a week (K-5) and 90 minutes a week (middle school). See the tables below for your specific grade level requirements.

Students may do other things during their independent workshop time. As discussed in that meeting, we strongly encourage providing students an opportunity to read a “Just Right” book during ELA workshop. Please reach out to your dean if you need suggestions on other independent activities.

Lexia and Sora

Please do not forget to have all student complete the Lexia placement test by this Wednesday, May 19. Lexia should be a part of your ELA workshop at least twice a week, beginning Monday, May 24.

Also, please make sure students know how to “borrow” books using Sora in preparation for summer school and learning. You can access all the hyperlinks for the training videos on the document below. All students should be familiar with Sora by June 4. Please see Jenaca if you need assistance.

Digital Tools

NHA is streamlining digital tools for the 21-22 school year. This initiative is called NHA Technology Model, and it has four categories for each digital tool: Provided, Supported, Not Supported, and Prohibited. Definitions for each category can be found in the table below.

Effective July 2021, the following digital tools will either be Not Supported or Prohibited.  Majority of the “Not Supported or Prohibited” tools that we use are being replaced by Lexia, Dreambox, and Sora which puts us at an advantage since we have been trained/introduced to all three.

Laptop Agreement

All extra technology that staff used this school year: monitors, Chromebooks, etc. must be turned into Sarah D before you leave for the summer. The only technology that salary staff can check out for the summer is your laptop. If you would like to keep your laptop over the summer, please complete the form below.

Technology Usage

M-STEP testing starts next week and goes until May 14. Due to bandwidth limitations, students are NOT allowed to use technology during lunch or recess. In addition, teachers CANNOT livestream instructional content, instead it must be downloaded.

New Google Meet Features

Check out the document below that outlines some new features available to you in Google Meet.

You are able to:

  • Preventing other participants from joining prior to the host
  • Disabling the ability of participants to share screens
  • Disabling the ability of participants to send chat messages

New Features in Google Meet 9.17.20 by embryjd on Scribd

Blocksi Update

Blocksi is a tool with many different functions. We will continue to use Blocksi to:

·      Monitor student Chromebooks in real-time

·      Provide content filtering to ensure students are accessing only appropriate content

·      Enforce specific websites or content for students to help ensure on-task behavior

·      Allow teachers/staff to connect with students through private chat options

·      Allow teachers/staff to allow/block websites as needed for their own classrooms

·      Use to administer assessments, such as NWEA, in a secure environment

Blocksi also provides a synchronous instructional tool (or conference mode) to perform live sessions with students. At this point in time, this feature of Blocksi is not performing consistently for all NHA schools. Because of this, NHA recommends that schools use Google Meet, especially for synchronous sessions with more than 10 students. If you try Blocksi for synchronous sessions and don’t experience any issues, you can use Blocksi. The synchronous or conference feature will continue to be available.

Google Classroom and Meet

We ask that you continue to strongly encourage your students to log into Google Classroom and Meets using their Clever account, as opposed to their parent’s personal email by resharing the following PDF with your families. Thank you for everything that you do to support online safety!

Google Voice

If you are interested in making personal phone calls to connect with your students, I encourage you to use Google Voice. Google Voice allows you to make and receive phone calls from your cell phone without using your personal phone number.

RL 2.0 Student Behavior and Technology Rollout

NHAhelp
A dynamic help tool that contains a variety of technology tutorials for many NHA platforms.  Tutorials come in the form of step-by-step how to guides, interactive tutorials and video trainings.  NHAhelp must be activated for the first use but will be automatically launched after that.  A blinking lightbulb notifies you when a tutorial is available for the active screen.  Simply click the lightbulb to see a list of tutorial titles associated with the page. Instructions for activating NHAhelp are below.

NHA Schoolwide Behavior System for Live Online Learning
Teachers use the Schoolwide Behavior System for Live Online Learning to document student behavior and teacher responses to those behaviors, during live online learning sessions. Managing the virtual classroom requires teachers to establish and communicate the classroom expectations, monitor student interactions in class, and hold students accountable to the Student Code of Conduct and all related policies.  NOW you will also be able to record student behavior in myNHA Behavior!  You can find the Schoolwide Behavior System for Live Online Learning below.

Google Meet Expectations

When doing live meetings, Google Meet should only be conducted in Google Classroom or the Google Meet App. Please read through the document below for more information.

If you are choosing to use the Google Meet app, you would click on the app and create your meeting nickname, then click continue. It is that easy! If you need help setting up the live sessions, please do not hesitate to reach out to a member of the admin team.

Live Meeting Schedule

If you are conducting live meetings with your students, please adhere to the schedule below. This schedule was created to take into consideration:

     1. Families that have children at multiple grade levels
     2. Families that may only have one device for students to utilize

In addition, new security features in Google Meet do not allow students to create their own Google Meet sessions. However, students could rejoin a teacher-created Google Meet session up to 3 minutes after the last person leaves the meeting, then the meeting locks. For this reason, teachers should be the last person to leave a live meeting and check back in 1-3 minutes to ensure no students have rejoined.

Live Meeting

We are excited that NHA has provided us with a platform to conduct live meetings with our students, Google Meet. At this time, Keystone will be offering this platform beginning Monday, April 20, so that we can ensure consistency and understanding of the expectations of this platform. Please be on the lookout for more information.
