ABCDE Goals-Attendance

Did you know that Jen Horner and I meet every month to discuss our chronic absentee students? From that meeting we schedule Attendance Correction Action Plan (A-CAP) meetings (Step 2) and/or final parent meeting (Step 3) before contacting the authorities (Step 4).

Jen and I had our first attendance meeting this past Tuesday and we have over 44 students with four or more absences…ALREADY! This is really sad.

She will be contacting all of those students to put them on an A-CAP, but she cannot do this if you are not doing your part (Step 1).

As a reminder, when a student reaches two absences, the teacher is required to contact the parent/guardian by phone, email, or in person to inquire about the well-being of the student. In addition, after four absences the teacher is required to contact the parent/guardian again to discuss the causes of the absences and offer support and/or suggestions for improvement.

Make sure to inform your dean and Jen Horner of all contacts (e.g., ‘cc’ on the email) for documentation purposes in case the absences escalate to an A-CAP or a referral to Sumpter Police or Wayne County Prosecutor’s Erase Truancy Program.

There are examples of a communication that you can use when emailing families on the U-drive àAttendance folder à Teacher Email to Parents. Please feel free to “tweak” the email templates to add your personal touch or if you have a unique situation.

Thank you for your assistance with reminding parents that minimizing absences to only those that are absolutely necessary will have a positive effect on achievement.

Staff Meeting

Starting at 3:45, please go to the staff lounge to sign in, pick up documents, and grab some snacks. Our staff meeting will begin promptly at 4:00 pm in the technology room.

You can click here for the agenda.

Staff Member Children

As a reminder, if you have children that attend Keystone, please see our three expectations below. As a Keystone staff member and parent, myself, these rules apply to my children too! So, if you see the Drain girls doing any of the following, please let me know.

     1.    Please make sure your child is not roaming the building unattended. It’s fine if they are going to a designation alone, but they shouldn’t just be walking around.

It’s a safety concern for the student and liability for the building.  This also causes other staff members to spend time addressing behaviors or concerns when they are here early or staying later to accomplish work.

     2.   Children of staff members are not allowed in the staff lounge and shouldn’t be eating the items brought for the staff.

We work hard to keep the staff lounge a place where everyone can step away from work and engage in “safe” conversations and activities without the concern of little eyes and ears. We also commit to bringing in food for the staff, but we have many staff member kids here and if they are eating the food, many staff members that participate in these activities miss out on the opportunity because items are gone.

     3.    Children of staff members need to stay in their classroom until Driveline has ended. They should not be in their parent’s classroom before 3:45 pm.

While you still have your students in your classroom, you are responsible for supervising them and half of another class due to “extra prep.” That's already an abundance of students in one classroom and we shouldn’t be adding anymore with staff children.

Thank you for adhering to these three expectations. Let me know if you have any questions.
